| | We have heard that the young surgeon at the centre of the Sh*t-gate controversy has been reinstated. His personal nightmare is over. Nonetheless many of the underlying issues remain unresolved. Now the unfortunate individual has been removed from the debate the questionable processes that led to his suspension need to be closely scrutinised. This sequence of events must not be allowed to happen again. It has widened the gap between the "great and the good" and the grass-roots leaving the sour taste of distrust in everyone's mouth. We must not allow the draconian treatment of a member of our profession to stifle the debate about accountability in medicine. Remedy will be looking closely into the detail of the events of the last 6 weeks and will keep you informed of our findings. | |

The DH is calling for a reduction in the number of specialty training posts, partly because of the projected consultant numbers and partly because of the difficulty in delivering adequate training to those in 'training posts'. This is the first time that they have recognised that large numbers of core training posts/programmes exist primarily to support service delivery rather than to train the specialists needed in the future.
